Dashner's Life:
Family
James Smith Dashner grew up with five brothers and sisters, loving each and every minute of his life. James and his siblings got a long but since there were so many of them, their house would be like a crazy jungle. Dashner was raised as a Mormon family. He grew up under the attentive watch of two parents. He states that his parents were strict but were very supportive of his career and they encouraged him to pursue his dreams. James’ family is really optimistic and loves him and his writing.
James has been married for five years, to Lynette Anderson from West Valley City, Utah. James and his family moved down to South Jordan City, Utah. Dashner is the father of four children. He says that he loves spending time with his children. He tries to make as much time for them as possible with his hectic writing schedule. In the book The 13th Reality the family is lightly portrayed off of his family growing up and his current family. Dashner really enjoys spending time with his family and tries to be the best father that he can be.
Early Life
James Dashner was born on November 26, 1976. He was raised in Austell, Georgia and is a self-described southerner. Since he grew up in such a warm climate, that’s how he got the inspiration for the sun flares in the series of Maze Runner. James didn't travel much as a child but at the age of two he moved to Minnesota. James stated that he’s always been an avid reader ever since his childhood. Whenever he had free time he would spend it reading any book he could get his hands on. When James was just ten years old he would type on his parents typewriter, this early writing really inspired him to continue his passion. In 1991, James Dashner graduated from Duluth High School. He moved from Atlanta, Georgia to Provo, Utah. James Dashner moved to Provo, Utah to go to Brigham Young University. He earned a masters degree in accounting.
Young Adulthood:
James Dashner met his wife at Brigham Young University, and now, still in lives in Utah. Before he became a full time writer, he studied accounting and worked in the field of finance.
Writing Introduction:
Then he moved into writing, not missing working with numbers at all. In 1998, he started writing stories more frequently. That same year, he wrote his first published book, “A Door in the Woods.” The book was released on June 1, 2003. In 2004, he released the Jimmy Fincher Saga (Which starts with “A Door in the Woods”). He thinks he is lucky, because he has a passion for what he does now, and believes he has the greatest job in the world.

Awards and Achievements:
James Dashner is a recently successful author. His most successful series is The Maze Runner. The Maze Runner book has won many awards as well. It spent over a year on the New York Times Best-Selling list. Dashner felt accomplished for this achievement. The Maze Runner also won the Missouri Truman Readers Award. The Missouri Truman Readers Award is selected by sixth through eighth graders. James Dashner realized his most appropriate audience would be tweens.
The Maze Runner is Dashner’s most popular book, which won him many awards. The Maze Runner won the New York State Charlotte Award in 2012, the Kentucky Bluegrass Award, the Oregon Reader’s Choice Award, the New Hampshire Isinglass Teen Read Award, and the Illinois Abraham Lincoln Award. The Maze Runner had won the Georgia Peach Book Award, his home state, and the New Jersey Garden State Book Award, as well. The Journal of Curious Letters has also won Dashner the Borders Original Voices Pick in 2008. Dashner felt confident from all his important and valuable accomplishments.
Dashner’s The Maze Runner has also won him two very special awards. It has won him the Run-Of-State Award. The Run-Of-State Award is an award chosen by all middle school and high school students from a number of schools. This was a huge achievement for Dashner, knowing now that his book was chosen as the favorite of tweens and teens. The other big award Dashner won was the Arizona Grand Canyon Reader Award. Dashner’s The Maze Runner won this award in 2012. The Grand Canyon Reader Award is an award voted for by many students in Arizona choosing their absolute favorite book. Dashner felt that he could appeal to many people at this point in his career. James Dashner has won a large number of incredible awards.
